WASTE TO ENERGY

Environmental Considerations

Social Impact of Waste to Energy Project

CONCLUDING REMARKS

  • The waste to energy (WtE) project is an effective way to manage solid waste in the communities. It utilizes waste - segregated or not - to generate electricity needed badly for economic development. As a result, communities will be cleared of eyesores and bad smell from rotting wastes. It also reduces emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the atmosphere and helps in mitigating climate change. The WtE project is environment-friendly technology.

  • The WtE project will also provide employment which comes mostly from the local population improving the local economy. It also encourages development of alternative and/or additional livelihood of some family members and local entrepreneurs. The project may sponsor training on livelihood for the barangays, helping the poor start their own income generating cooperatives.

  • The WtE is an intensive capital investment project which needs huge investment for building the power plant, developing supporting equipment and improving the surrounding landscape and environment. This is pursuant to Section 8 (f) of RA 2008, the Philippine National Solid Waste Management Strategy, Republic Act 9003 (RA 9003), otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, declaring the policy of the government to “adopt a systematic, comprehensive, and ecological solid waste management program” in the country.as Provided in RA 9003 and its IRR are mandates and schedules of implementation to be undertaken by provincial, city/municipal, and barangay governments within their jurisdiction. Also, in Section 30 of R.A. 9513 provides the use of “waste to energy” technology to manage solid waste subject to requirements of RAs 9003 and 8749 (Clean Air Act).

  • The MAXI energy technology assures the public that there will be no emission (dust, odor, polluted air, leachate, etc) from the WtE power plant and clean the community of solid wastes. The technology is both environment friendly and economically feasible as shown above improving the environmental and economic progress of the country.
